Abstract

Re-examination of old collections, both osteological specimens and archival materials, describing the conditions of finding and receiving them by the Museum, is extremely important in the bioarchaeological study of anthropological material. This paper presents the results of the study of archival materials on collections stored in the Research Institute and Museum of Anthropology of the Moscow State University, originating from the territory of the modern-day Dagestan and dating from the Middle Bronze Age to the Late Middle Ages. Materials and methods. The materials in question come from 12 burial grounds. The total number of storage units is 122, including 116 skulls and 6 postcranial skeletons. Written archive sources of the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Research Institute and the Museum of Anthropology of the Moscow State University were used in the work. The archaeological context of the discovery of skulls was clarified based on the inscriptions and markings on the skulls, as well as according to information from the inventory book of the Department of osteology (Scientific archive of the Research Institute and Museum of anthropology of Moscow state University). Results. The main part of the paper reviews the geographical location, dating of the sites, number of storage units, the history of entry of the anthropological material into the collection; if possible, special features observed on the skulls are indicated as well as that of the funeral rites used. A brief description of the anthropological researches, conducted using this material shortly after its collection, is also given. Discussion. The osteological collection from the territory of Dagestan reflects the period of formation of modern archaeological science on the territory of the Republic, 1950s-early 1960s. The collection of the Research Institute and Museum of anthropology includes materials from the lowlands, low-mountain and mountin parts of the Republic of Dagestan. Chronologically, more than 70% of the collection is represented by materials from the Middle Ages, while finds from the Early Iron and Bronze Ages are less represented.
