Abstract

Introduction. Since the middle of the last century anthropologists, ecologists, geneticists, epidemiologists are talking and writing about physiological anthropology more and more often. Physiological anthropology combines theories and studies of human adaptability to the environment. In the Russia T.I. Alekseeva was the first organizer of systematic research on physiological anthropology, and she was later recognized as the founder of physiological anthropology in Russia. Ten-year period (1961-1970) is the initial stage of a long and steady development of this discipline as it was precise during these years that physiological anthropology was formed. Results and discussion. The main events of the indicated period are considered in chronological order in this article. The results of new methodological and theoretical approaches developed in the framework of physiological anthropology are presented. An integrated approach to the study of various groups of people living in diverse geographical conditions for many years determined the methodology of physiological anthropology. A number of non-traditional characteristics (for example, metabolic) and new methods for anthropologists have been introduced to the anthropological research. In accordance with modern terminology, the study of complex metabolic processes at the population level in the physiological anthropology of the initial period can be called innovative. In 1961-1970 team led by T.I. Alekseeva had a lot of articles published, candidate dissertations written, and numerous reports made. Conclusion. Physiological anthropology has all its successes, achievements, and discoveries largely due to T.I. Alekseeva. The role of T.I. Alekseeva as an outstanding organizer and leader is shown in this paper. Much attention is paid to field work without which physiological anthropology could not have taken place.
