Abstract

Introduction. The article presents the study of association between phenotypic sex and aggressiveness in sportsmen and men not engaged in professional sports; the main goal of the study is to reveal the differences in the level of aggressiveness in athletes and men not engaged in sports and to determine the relationship between phenotypic are behavioral indicators of masculinity. Material and methods. The study was held in Minsk, Republic of Belarus. The sample of men not engaged in professional sports was represented by the students of Belorussian State University, 61 persons. The sample of sportsmen was represented by 48 wrestlers, 36 men of sports-fighting single combats, 31 swimmers. The age of patients was 17-26 years. Masculinity was determined according to morphofunctional parameters (the method of Martirisov et al.), finger index (the method of J. Manning), gender role characteristics (questionnaire «Masculinity, femininity and gender type of personality»). Aggressiveness was determined according to questionnaires by Bass-Perry and aggression provocation by D. O’Conner. Besides that, all sportsmen filled in the application «Mental reliability of the athlete» by V. Millman. Results. It’s been revealed that sportsmen have no direct association of morphofunctional parameters and aggressiveness, which is different in the control group of non-sportsmen. The sample of non-sportsmen has significant positive association of body type masculinity with the common scale of aggression and its components: physical aggression, anger, heteroaggression. Along with the increase of the body type masculinity of non-sportsmen, the indicators of aggression control and autoagression decrease. The finger index of men is significantly correlated with hostility indicator. Non-sportsmen have significantly higher scores of aggressiveness than sportsmen. Sportsmen have negative correlation of aggressiveness score with competitive emotional stability, sport’ self regulation, competitive motivation. Sportsmen of different sport specializations differ in the scale of aggression: sports with «autoagression» (the lack of the contact with the rival) have less aggressiveness scores as compared to the sports with the «hard» contact with the rival. Conclusion. The score of aggressiveness is not associated with morphofunctional indicators of masculinity of sportsmen; the association of phenotypic indicators with aggression in non-sportsmen is more obvious as compared to sportsmen. Non-sportsmen have higher scores of personal aggression than sportsmen.
