Abstract

Children and adolescents living in the areas with iodine deficiency have the highest risk of health abnormalities. That is why studies of somatic development of children in the regions with difficult environments are so important. The aim of the present paper is to study morphofunctional parameters in children and adolescents of Saratov region, particularly in the towns of Khvalynsk and Balakovo, which are characterized with high level of iodine deficiency. 418 boys aged from 12 to 17 and 141 girls from 8 to 17 were studied in 2002-2004. The program included anthropometric measurements, evaluation of sexual maturation indices, constitutional traits (somatotypes). Thyroid volume was estimated by ultrasound technique. There are clear evidences that children and adolescents with enlarged thyroid gland (endemic goiter) were characterized with slower somatic development if compared with children without these symptoms. Though the direction of this trend was the same for both sexes, it were boys who showed the most significant differences. It may be considered as another evidence to the viewpoint that boys are more vulnerable to adverse conditions. Our results coincide with other authors’ data on growth and development of children in the areas with endemic goiter.
