Abstract

The results of auxological investigations carried out at the Institute and Museum of Anthropology, Lomonosov Moscow State University, for the last twenty years, hase been reviewed in the paper. The following problems are in the focus of discussion: geographical variations of growth and development characteristics; ethnic aspects of growth studies; the influence of environmental factors, namely, of climatic and socioeconomic ones on growth and development; secular trend as a major auxological research goal. At present the team of auxologists studies obesity in children. The project is characterized with interdisciplinary approach aimed at several goals. With traditional anthropological and modern innovative techniques, secular changes of obesity in Russia will be evaluated, and the influence of genetic, ethnic, biological and psychological factors will be assessed.
