Abstract

Introduction. Academician A.P. Pavlov is a major specialist in geology, mineralogy, and paleontology, he was one of the first people who started collecting anthropological fossils from the ancient geological layers of the Volga region. Part of these findings is still stored in the funds of the Geological Museum of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Since A.P. Pavlov was interested in different groups of fossils in the context of paleobiology (including mammals), it is not surprising that he collected human fossils too. Some of these human fossils have been studied by him, and the results were published. Materials and methods. The Pavlov’ collection is represented by the remains of several mature individuals: two calvarium, lower jaw and the diaphyseal part of the humerus. The materials were collected at different times and under different circumstances. A historiographic analysis of these anthropological findings was carried out. Results and discussion. A.P. Pavlov was the first researcher who questioned the age of the most ancient Paleolithic inhabitants of the Volga region. Realizing the importance and value of these findings for ancient history, he insisted on archaeological research in the Ulyanovsk and Samara Volga regions in order to find the indigenous place of the “Undor people”. Due to his authority and engagement of Moscow archaeologists and anthropologists to this region, a systematic study and search for the Paleolithic population of the Volga region began.
