Abstract

The interralations of biological age criteria and the processes of personal somatic specificity development through the interval from birth to 6 years of age are analysed. Biological age criteria most widely used while examining children of this age are regarded – dental age and motor age for infants, Philippine test and dental age for preschool children. Materials and methods. Three data samples are examined. The first one is a longitudinal study of children aged 3–7 years held in Moscow kinder-gardens in 1974–78. The standard anthropometric programme includes 27 parameters. The sum ob biological age criteria includes 10 parameteres: dental age at 6 years of age, Philippine test determined at 3,4,5 and 6 years of age, the age of first tooth eruption, the age of motor functions development – sitting, standing, walking. The second sample includes Moscow children from birth to 7 years of age examined in 1973–74 about 4 thousand in number. The anthropometric programme includes 24 parameters. The number of biological age criteria is 5. The third sample includes infants aged 0–12 months examined in Moscow in 2009, the programme includes body length and mass, head and chest circumferences and the age of first tooth eruption. The interralation measure of somatic traits and biological age criteria is the standard correlation coefficient. The attempt is undertaken to create the integral biological age criteria for the 3–6 year interval. Its construction is based regarding mutual correlations of separate criteria using multivariate statistics’ methods. Results and discussion. Analyzed criteria are independent from each other and correlated with different somatic components. Philippine test characterizes the development of body proportions, changing during growth acceleration of 5–6 year old children. Dental age at 6 years is connected first of all with skeletal dimensions but also with total somatic acceleration for boys, but only with skeletal dimensions for girls. Acceleration of motor development marks the development of muscle somatic component. Conclusion. The independence of biological age criteria prevent from regarding them as interchangeable. The maximal number of correlations of biological age criteria examined is revealed for skeletal dimensions, almost none for skinfolds. Thus skeletal dimensions are most reliable markers of developmental processes of children aged 0–6 years. Some facts of sexual dimorphism illustrate that somatic traits of girls are less correlated with biological age criteria.
