Abstract

Materials and methods. Changes in height, body weight, chest circumference and body mass index (BMI) were analyzed in the three series of measurements of children and adolescents living in the city of Sukhum (Abkhazia). The investigations were conducted in 1980, 2005 and 2012. Altogether more than 2,000 individuals of both sexes were investigated. Results. Urban children and adolescents measured in 2012 surpassed their counterparts of two previous series of measurement in height, and in annual increments of this characteristic. In body mass modern urban boys were also bigger than their peers measured in 1980 and 2005, in all age groups. Similar trend was also revealed in girls but the differences were not statistically significant. 16-17-year-old girls had even smaller values of body weight, which can be explained by the influence of sociocultural stereotypes. In chest circumference, the boys measured in 2012 were larger than their peers from the previous sets of measurements. The girls of the 2012 set of measurements had practically the same values of chest circumferences as their counterparts observed in 1980, except for 16- and 17-year-olds who had smaller values of this trait. Discussion. Schoolchildren measured in 2005 in most cases had smaller values of the studied body dimensions than their peers of the first and the third series of measurements, which can be explained by a negative influence of worsened socioeconomic conditions during their early years of childhood. When the values of body mass index were compared in the three sets of measurements, it was revealed that the percentage of individuals with overweight and obesity was increasing in time for children of both sexes, thus supporting an overall trend in this parameter observed in many other populations.
