Abstract

Introduction. Artifacts from the Classic Grotto of Laugerie-Basse site (Dordogne, France) excavations are represented in the archeological depository of Anuchin Institute and Museum of Anthropology (Lomonosov Moscow State University). Materials and methods. This collection consists of 146 catalog numbers or 152 items. Results and discussion. Prevalence of tools in lithic and organic inventory suggests that the assemblage was formed by artificial selection, therefore, we do not have competent data to analyze the industry. However, some artifacts help to attribute the collection to Magdalenian. Thus, double borer, Laugerie-Basse point, and double row harpoons correspond to Upper Magdalenian. In addition, Lussac-Angles points are typical for Middle Magdalenian. Pierced phalanx (whistle?) are very similar to some pieces in other collections from Laugerie-Basse. During the inventory of faunal part of the collection, a human tooth (Inventory KO157/24) has been found among the animal teeth. This is a well-preserved tooth, which belonged to a young individual. Occlusal wear is minimal, and four main cusps are clearly read. The Carabelli’s cusp is sited on a mesiolingual corner; on the crown, there is an additional fifth tubercle - metaconule. The size of the crown is close to the average values of the teeth of this class, obtained by analyzing the variability of the teeth of Homo sapiens. Microfocus X-ray analysis has made it possible to characterize the tooth as a hypotaurodont. The cause of this anomaly remains unclear. Often, scientists note that this feature is more common in fossil forms, and in this case, taurodontism is considered as an archaic feature.
