Abstract

Introduction. In 2023, M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University is preparing to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the inauguration of the new buildings of MSU. Various options for the construction and reconstruction were considered since 1935. Materials and methods. In the publication, along with the known materials of the state and museum archives, the original source was used – Calendar reference book «Moscow University 1949-1950», discovered by the author in the private archive of one of the staff members of the Moscow State University Scientific Library. The handbook referred to documents for limited use. The publication was prepared by the publishing house of Moscow State University, all copies of the circulation were numbered. Results and discussion. Proposals to expand the territory of Moscow University were twice implemented within the boundaries of a block in the center of Moscow. After the Great Patriotic War, the possibilities were exhausted. The problem of overpopulation has become especially acute. The data from «Calendar...» about the structure and location of Moscow State University in 1949 indirectly confirm this. By 1949, in the buildings of the «Moscow State University on Mokhovaya» in total there were: 11 faculties, 4 general university departments, 6 libraries, 4 museums, 9 research institutes, 12 divisions of the central office, an editorial office, a publishing house and a printing house, 3 scientific societies. The «Calendar...» lists more than 350 structural units at the level of department or «cabinet». Conclusions. Archival reference literature, designed to quickly obtain brief and generalized knowledge in various, including everyday areas, can be used to replenish and expand modern scientific knowledge.
