Abstract

The Department of Anthropology of Moscow State University is the only one in Russia that trains anthropologists in biological sciences. Graduates of the department have the opportunity to work in various academic and educational institutions, where specialists in human biology are in demand. Modern physical (biological) anthropology is the science of man as a biological species: its origin and biological variability in time and space (anthropogenesis, ethnic anthropology, and human morphology). At the same time, men are also being studied as a biosocial phenomenon, since the manifestations of biological nature are largely mediated by the social environment. At the initiative of Professor D.N. Anuchin Department of Anthropology was established in 1919 at the Natural Department of the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of Moscow University. This event was preceded by a long and intensive work of Professor of Moscow University A.P. Bogdanov (teacher of Anuchin), who actively promoted the idea of the need for anthropological education. In 1933, the department became part of the Faculty of Biology of Moscow State University, retaining part of the humanities in the educational program (including archaeology and ethnography), which allowed students to comprehensively learn about the human biosocial phenomenon. In connection with the 100th anniversary of the Department of Anthropology, the article discusses the history of the formation of anthropology at the university, the organization of the department, the formation and development of the educational program for the training of anthropologists.
