Abstract

Introduction. Cross-breeding can change gene frequency in populations, so the study of ethnic marriage assortativeness and cross-breeding is an integral part of the Protocol for genetic and epidemiological survey of the region population according to which employees of the laboratory of genetic epidemiology, of the Research Centre for Medical Genetics have been studying indigenous peoples in different regions of Russia for more than 4 last decades. Currently, the laboratory operates in the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania (RSO). Materials and methods. Marriage records for 1990-2000 are considered. In later records there are no data on ethnicity of spouses. Marriages of spouses of post-productive age (a woman older than 45 years), marriages of residents of other regions (Moscow, St. Petersburg, etc.) are excluded from the total sample. In addition, in some cases, the nationality is not specified, these marriages are also excluded from consideration. Totally 27541 marriage records are included in this analysis. Ethnic wedding assortativness is calculated by the method proposed N. P.Bochkov et al [1984]. Results. Interethnic marriages in North Ossetia amounts to 23% of the urban population and 15% in rural areas. Ethnic wedding assortativness in Ossetians amounts to 1.3 (varies from 0,97 to 4.6 in the regions), Russian 4,7 (from 1.9 to 14.5). The intensity of cross-breeding of the main ethnic groups of the RSO varies from 3.8% in Ossetians of the Irafsky district to 90.5% in Georgians of the Mozdoksky district. Conclusion. The population is not panmixia by ethnicity. Despite the preference for choosing a spouse of the same ethnic group there is a high level of cross-breeding, mainly among the small alien population.
