Abstract

Introduction. From 2017 the Nubian Mission of the Research Institute and Museum of Anthropology, Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU) carries out archaeological and anthropological investigations at the site Deraheib in the Red Sea province of the Sudan Republic. The second season took part in 14th November-14th December 2018. The Mission is supported by the MSU, Institute for Bioarchaeology of the British Museum and the Alliance for Mining (Kush) Company. The article contains information on the results of the second campaign. Materials and methods. The article based on the materials obtained in course of archaeological and anthropological works carried out at Deraheib in 2018 season. In order to study the stratigraphy of the different areas of the site and define time of their functioning we carried out the following works: – Excavations of Building 1 in the Settlement area; – Excavations of Building 3 (the so-called Mosque); – Excavations in the “Northern Necropolis” area; – Excavations in the “Southern Necropolis”. The process of archaeological investigation has been recorded with application of the following equipment: Topcon GTS 230N total station; LEICA BLK 360 3D laser scanner; Phantom 4 Pro drone. Results. Field research of the season 2018 let us collect important information concerning the stratigraphy of the different parts of the site and make some suggestions about their dating and functioning. Judging by the collected data, we are able to formulate objectives for the further seasons. Thus, excavations which were conducted in the Building 1 let us suppose that the settlement had been built in medieval period on the place of exhausted gold-mines. Data obtained in the course of the test excavations in the Building 3 which is located in the very center of the settlement gave us some evidence to presume that it might have been a congregational (Friday) mosque. Test trench in the so-called “Northern Necropolis” did not reveal any trances of the ancient burial ground which was marked on the sketch map drawn by Linant de Bellefonds in the 1830th. In the “Southern Necropolis” we have excavated seven graves with eight burials. Anthropological material has fare good state of preservation. At present the obtained data is analyzed by the anthropologist. Conclusion. Fieldworks, which were carried out in the season 2018, showed that the site has a very high potential for further exploration.
