The name of V.P. Yakimov is primarily concerned with the study of two fundamental scientific problems in evolutionary anthropology: 1) the taxonomic position of australopithecines and 2) the role of European Neanderthals, known at the time, in the biological history of sapientation. Not all views of V.P. Yakimov and other Soviet anthropologists on the evolutionary processes in anthropogenesis are divided at the present time. New findings, approaches and methods have significantly expanded the source of knowledge base of specialists. Nevertheless, the works of V.P. Yakimov are of interest for the history of science and gives an opportunity to assess his contribution to anthropology from the modern positions.
