Abstract

Introduction. The present paper is studying correlations between the level of physical activity and daily calorie intake, on the one hand, and morphological characteristics, on the other hand, in modern children and adolescents living in Arkhangelskaya region and the city of Moscow. Materials and Methods. 203 girls and 193 boys from 11 to 17 years of age have been studied in 2010. The program consisted of a large set of anthropometric measurements, including skinfold thickness. Daily physical activity and calorie intake were studied by questionnaire. Periods of time (in minutes) assigned for physical exercise, watching TV, working at the computer etc. have been recorded. Results and Discussion. The analysis of data obtained by the questionnaires demonstrated that urban children in average spent more time in hypokinetic activity (sitting at the computer, watching TV, reading etc.). At the same time they are consuming more calories with food. Positive correlations of these indices with fat accumulation (skinfold thickness on corpus and extremities, absolute and relative fat mass) determine the somatic status of urban children. It is interesting to note that urban children also spent more time in physical activity. This result was quite unexpected because a priori it should be rural children who were more physically active. However according to our data, it is vice versa. It could be explained that urban children particularly from Moscow had much better opportunities, also in terms of money, for healthy life style and physical training. Nevertheless, they have larger values of body weight and fat mass due to the fact that they consume more calories and spent more time in hypokinetic activity. Conclusions. Our results confirm the trend shown by many other authors in different countries that recently the percentage of overweight and obese children is increasing due to lower physical activity and increasing calorie intake. Further studies are needed with more numerous sample sizes and more detailed analysis of children’s diet.
